[Husker] Coach question

I'll give my contrarian viewpoint. My opinion of Bill
Callahan has steadily dwindled over the last 18 months
or so. It's not hatred.

>From what I've seen, Callahan's strength is in
recruiting. Recruitniks love the guy, and he has
obviously makes an impression with high school coaches
and players. You do have to like some of the players
that Callahan and his team have brought in.

However, I have 2 major criticisms of Callahan. First
is in game planning. In my opinion, Callahan's
coaching has lost us more games than it has won to
date. I will acknowledge that Callahan inherited a
team that wasn't suited to his offensive scheme, but
he also insisted that the offense was flexible and
could adapt to any talent level. But he didn't adapt
his offense; he tried to adapt his players. Look at
last year's game plan against Oklahoma, and compare
that to the plan against Iowa State. Most people
generally agree that if Callahan had used the OU game
plan against the 'Clones, we would have won that game
in Ames. And gone to a bowl game. And had another 15
practices to master the West Coast Offense.

The second is the man himself. He now has 3 gaffes to
his credit over the past 24 months: "Gesture Gate",
"F-n Hillbillies", and "Dumbest Team". He says
Harrison Beck is his backup quarterback, yet he keeps
putting Joe Ganz #2 on his depth chart. He thought
our rushing performance against Pitt was "inspiring"
and that "when you run the ball for over 150 yards,
good things are happening". Last year, after a 14-8
win over Kansas, he opened his post game comments with
a "WOW!" There have been many other comments that
he's made that make me wonder about his integrity as
well.

Perhaps he'll turn things around and prove me
completely wrong. (Won't be the first time.) My
fear, though, is that in 5 or 10 years, we'll look at
the Callahan era like Oklahoma fans view the Howard
Schnellenberger and John Blake years.

I hope I'm wrong.
