The winner of the Big 12 earns the automatic bid to the NCAA, losers get to wait on the selection committee.  Do well in the tournament and you're likely in, do bad and you might not get in.  That is why I said they were playing to get into the NCAA.  But it's nice to see that someone kind of knew what was going on.

In reply to the other post, (I'm lazy, why write two posts)  I've lurked here for years and only occassionally post because I'm too da#n far away to have much first hand (none) knowledge of anything going on.  The volleyball team hasn't been mentioned since August.  Not recently.  The soccer team - I'd guess I'm the first to even bring them up.  I suspect we'll hear about the men's basketball team in January.
