[Husker] Coach question

I'm very ambivalent about this question.

On the one hand, I'm a Husker fan forever - win or lose - they're my
team. So, I'd much rather they win and he's the coach so their success
is his success.

BUT, I don't like Callahan and really don't have faith in his ability to
bring the program back to where it belongs. I think his "f'ing
hillbillies" comment and the throat-slashing gesture are signs of his
true personality and I do blame him for losing it, especially the
former. I thought his comments were inexcusable and the kind he
probably would have made about Husker fans in similar circumstances were
he coaching for one of our opponents. Had he taken personal
responsibility for last years disastrous season caused by his pig-headed
adherence to getting his system in place despite not having the players
to run it, I'd feel better about him. That showed me that it's all
about him, not the Huskers.

I think the sign of a good coach is his ability to work with what he has
and build, not cram square pegs into round holes and damn the
consequences.

I have even less respect for Steve P, who, after a whopping 9 months in
the job decided it was time for Frank to go and ended up hiring someone
who tanked a Super Bowl team.

I also agree with those who say we need to see what the 'blue-chip'
recruits actually do in the long run. Having the top ranked recruiting
class is like having a great draft in the NFL. It's irrelevant of the
people don't perform.

That said, I admit to being encouraged by my perception that this years
team has improved game-to-game. I think they'll end up being bowl
eligible and we'll have BC around for several years to come. Even if he
takes them to a NC, I won't think he's a good guy.

I want Callahan to succeed, because if he fails, I fear it will be the
beginning of a long, dark period for 'Husker football -- similar to the
Gibbs / Schnellenberger / Blake era at Oklahoma before they hired Bobby
Stoops. (Anybody remember the score of Osborne's 250th win in 1997,
playing
Oklahoma? 69-7 -- I'll save y'all the trouble of Googling it. Makes
31-24
look pretty good in comparison, doesn't it?)

I like the focus on blue-chip recruiting that Callahan has brought to
NU. I
hope the AD and the administration are willing to give Callahan at least
5
years to get his players and system in place before they pull the plug.

I'm not crazy about the "f'ing hillbillies" or the throat-slashing
gesture,
but I can't blame Callahan for losing it in the heat of battle,
especially
because he had a front-row seat to the final table at last weekend's
Oklahoma Hold-'Em tournament. I can understand letting offensive linemen
get
away with holds inside the shoulder pads -- but when they pull our guys'
jerseys and tackle them, it's flagrant, and I get upset with the
no-calls as
well. (My children now fear me when football games are on TV -- they
think
"Holding" is a cuss word, as many times as I yell it ... 8^)
