All I have to say is, what a superb post!!! You nailed it. But
you have to understand it is Callahan's fault all the way because he
doesn't understand all the traditions (tongue planted very firmly in cheek).

What a piece of crap.
While it may be granted that this staff needs a better understanding of the
tradition and respect of this rivalry, there are plenty of under 30 Oklahoma
fans who need this lesson just as much. This group came of age during the
John Blake years and their formative memories are of butt kickings. When
they experienced their current success they reacted with all the class of a
K-State fan.
Tell Sittler that if there is anyone who needs to understand the class and
respect of this rivalry it is the Ruf-necks. I would hope that members of
that squad from the 60's 70's and 80's would be embarrased by the behavior
of these punks. It was stated by one of the members during the Delone trial
that it was their goal to get into the heads and irritate the opposition. I
would imagine that OSHA regulations being what they are, the spirit squad
members shooting off blanks would have to wear some kind of ear protection.
Our players did not have that advantage. It was stated at the trial that
Nick Povendo had one of the shotguns shot right in front of his face. (Do
you know how a helmet amplifies that kind of noise).
Callahan was upset about the lack of sideline control and the immature
antics of the spirit squad. He was trying to protect his players. (By the
way, was Osborne a jerk who didn't understand tradition when he complained
about the CU spirit squad when they tried to intimidate his players by
running Ralphie too close to them?) Do you think NU would allow this kind of
behavior at Memorial Stadium? Castiglione did. Maybe he needs to learn about
respect and tradition.
Perhaps Stoops needs to understand a little of the respect and tradition.
Did Osborne or Switzer try to score on the last drive of the game with a 30
point lead? Maybe a former OU assistant coach needs to understand the
respect and tradition considering the vile tactics used to recruit Reggie
Smith.
I have heard two different accounts of Callahan's hillbilly remark. One from
the press (that implies but doesn't state) he yelled it at the crowd as he
left the stadium. The other is from an individual who claims he was told by
someone who was there that Callahan said it as an aside to one of his
coaches as he left the field, and was overheard by sportswriters. I don't
know which account is correct, I wasn't there. However, I suspect one's
personal biases leads him to believe the version that best stokes those
biases.
