I have been harping on this for several years. Our recent talent, and you
can really only say this for defense, has been outstanding. We were never
accurately portrayed in recruiting analyses due to the offensive system
that we ran and how we filled positions according to the needs of our
program, not of the NFL. In particular, Frank Solich recruits - the
Bullocks brothers, DeMorrio Williams, Titus Adams, Le Kevin Smith were
outstanding. Frank fell victim to impatience and the need of feeling
important by Steve Peterson and incompetence by Craig Bohl.
Last season we suffered from having a coach who failed to optimize the
resources he was availed. I once read Steve Spurrier say he'd run the
wishbone if that was what was best for the talent he had. Bill Callahan
forced a round peg into a square hole. Maybe in the long run, now that
we've lost any identity we had as a football program, we'll be more
competitive in the recruiting market for NFL wannabe's looking to make us
a 2 year stopover. I guess that's what it is vogue now. Callahan has
made us an NFL minor league team - one could argue that we'll look better
in the recruiting rankings now.
This is the most obvious and least insightful post I have ever made here.
I have no idea why we even worry about debating such obvious points.
