To all of the Barry Collier excuse makers

NCAA tournament apperances under Barry Collier = 0
NCAA tournament appearances under Danny Nee = 5

Enough said.

Gee, I was expecting Beach to be posting a positive comment about
Husker BB. (That's sarcasm.)

Neal is becoming known for his lack of attention to facts, so I thought
I'd provide them. The executive summary is:

* Nee didn't put NU on the map because he wasn't very successful.
In fact, he was less successful than Iba, who preceeded him and
left the program in good shape.

* Collier's record is comparable to Nee's record in his first
five years and is clearly improving. And, Collier inherited
a gutted, losing program in shambles after Nee.

First, here is Danny Nee's conference record

7 - 7
4 - 10
4 - 10
3 - 11
9 - 5
7 - 7
8 - 6
7 - 7
4 - 10
4 - 10
7 - 9
10 - 6
10 - 6
4 - 12
88 -116 (43%)

What was Nee's conference record in his first five years? 39%. And,
it didn't improve much --- just 43% after 14 years.

Second, what is Collier's conference record.

7 - 9
3 - 13
6 - 10
6 - 10
7 - 8
29 - 50 (37%)

So, Nee won 39% after having inherited a winning program that went to
the NCAA tournament and Collier has won 37% after inheriting a losing
program in terrible shape. According to Nea, this makes Nee a historic
figure and Collier a bum.

As for putting NU on the map, let's look at Moe Iba's conference record
to see where NU was when Nee came to Lincoln.

8 - 6
9 - 5
7 - 7
9 - 5
7 - 7
5 - 9
8 - 6
53 - 45 (54%)

That is 54%, compared to Nee's 39%. Iba had one year in seven with a
losing conference record. Nee had seven years in 14 with a losing
conference record. Iba was conference coach of the year twice and
led NU to its first NCAA tournament in his final year. From there,
under Nee, it was mostly downhill with a winning conference record
in only four of his 14 seasons (whereas Iba had a winning conference
record in four of his seven seasons).

Collier doesn't have NU where we would like it but he is moving in
the right direction and seems to have even better talent coming.
Besides the financial costs to buy out Collier, a new coach with a
bullet would cost even more. (I'm not sure Bill Self would have
come to NU at any salary.) As the LJS speculated today, what coach
could NU get who would be a "wow" hire and how much would it cost?

Collier is making steady improvements and it makes sense to see where
he can take the program. If he doesn't have a winning conference
record over the next two years, I'd say it would be time to reluctantly
look for another coach, but now is not the time.

Neal, if you're going to post something for us to think about, take
a look at the facts first.
