>From what I understand and have heard primarily from Bill Byrne several years ago when he came to South Sioux as part of a Big Red Tour, BYU and Arkansas were both options.  There was some talk about allowing Colorado to leave and go the the Pac 10.  The post is correct; as I understand, Governor Richards insisted that Baylor be included.  The original plan was to not include them.  
 
I do not know for sure, but I also think I recall hearing that the conference also trademarked the name "Big 14" during the time of transition.  I suppose this leaves open the option to add teams in the future.

TCU wasn't exactly an earth-shaking name at the time the Big 12 was formed,
what were the other options then?

What school(s) do you have in mind now?
