[Husker] bummer

Lack of timely hitting and marginal defense were big contributors and the pitching was OK, not great. Ledbetter had a horrible game - the whole game could have been different if he made that simple catch...that was painful to watch and led to the big inning. Get that out and we are looking at probably only giving up 1, if any, in that inning instead of 4.

I also think this game showed Anderson's lack of experience managing this type of big game. Taking Dorn out with a 2-0 count for Duensing seems very questionable, especially since Dorn had settled down pretty well after the first inning. Some of the pinch hitting decisions struck me as a little odd too. It was like he couldn't decide if he was going to play it by the unwritten book of baseball managing rules or by instinct or by both. He just seemed in a little over his head to me - but I still think he is a great coach. Hopefully Bill Byrne thought the same thing I did today and will leave the CWS without taking Anderson or Childress with him back to College Station like the OWH semi-predicted this morning.

A loss isn't the end of the world, but it sure makes things more difficult for the Huskers. We will not only need that pitching depth now, we will need that pitching depth to step up and play HUGE with little margin for error. Lets hope the defense shores up and the sticks come around a little bit too.

Go Big Red...looks like I'll be taking Tuesday afternoon off to watch the elimination game on TV.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Volk

PS: I actually made the trip down to Lincoln this weekend from Minneapolis and it was GREAT! I hadn't been back for a CWS in quite a while and forgot what an amazing experince it really is...even if I had to wait in line after line after line...at least I had a parking pass to go with my GA tickets so not everything was all bad.

10 LOB and 11 out of 12 hits with 2 out. That says it all
for the offense. Fielding and pitching left some to be
desired too. Hopefully Kroenke can pitch a great game on
Tuesday and NU can get a few more timely hits against ASU.
