Pine tar is used to increase a players grip on the
bat but there is a limit to how far down on the handle
of the bat that the pine tar can be placed. Everyone
in college baseball uses aluminum bats and some
players chose to use pine tar to improve their grip.
However, most of the players put it on their helmets
as a "style" thing. It makes them look cool.
Take a look at some of the players who have a ton of
that stuff on their helmets, then look at their white
batting gloves that have no pine tar on them. Gordon
has stuck so much of that stuff on his helmet he has
grass permanently affixed to his helmet.
It is also a good luck thing. I know of one guy who
used some pine tar once and hit his first homer, then
put it on his helmet so he could touch it from then on
for luck.
