[Husker] batting helmets

I asked the same question of a friend who knows a lot about baseball and
he told me it's the pine tar from the bats. Apparently, the stuff gets
everywhere.

I'm probably the only person that doesn't know this, but why do all of
the Nebraska batting helmets look like they've been through a fire?
Were they?  Is this part of a tradition?
