Can someone enlighten an out-of-stater like myself who gets all of their
Husker baseball news from this list...are all of these players seniors
this year? Will they definitely be gone next year? Does MLB have any
restrictions for drafting college players? Can they draft them at any
point in their college careers? Particularly interested in what the
team will look like next year -- I know, this season still has a ways to
go (we hope) before it's over, but I'm catching the Husker baseball bug!
I grew up in Grand Island in the 70s and went to the John Sanders
baseball camp in GI -- that was about the only exposure to Husker
baseball I ever got. It's pretty cool to get excited about other sports
than football!

Subject: [Husker] MLB Draft Day 1
Greetings,
Four Huskers were taken on Day 1 of the MLB Draft yesterday. Those
players were:
Round 1:
Alex Gordon, Kanasas City (#2)
Round 3:
Brian Duensing, Minnesota (#83)
Round 5:
Zack Kroenke, NY (AL)(#169)
Round 10:
Joe Simokaitis, Chicago (NL)(#310)
Overall it marks the first time that the Huskers have had 3 players
taken in the first five rounds.
Gordon's selection is the Husker's fifth first round choice and the
first since 1995 when both Darin Erstad (#1) and Alvie Shepard (#21)
were selected.
Living in Minnesota and as a Twins fan, I am excited that the Twins took
Duensing. The Twins have one of the best scouting and player development
programs in all of baseball, one that has kept them in the upper echelon
of MLB (3 straight Division Titles with 1 ALCS appearance) despite being
a small market team with a payroll that ranks in the lower third of MLB.
Hopefully Brian's elbow holds up and he can be a contributor to the big
club in the future.
It should be a great Super Regional against Miami...I can't wait...BRING
ON THE CANES!!!
Sincerely,
Jeffrey Volk
