Unfortunately, it seems like there are one or two deaths like this annually.
Wheeler's family settled with several supplement makers last fall, as I
recall, even though according to the autopsy report ephedra was not a
factor in his death.
I hadn't seen a specific settlement figure from Northwestern, though I
think that's what the Chicago Tribune is reporting. (I don't have a login
for them, they ask more questions than the World-Herald.)
I also suspect insurance companies are ponying up a large part of whatever
sum is being offered.
The only current news story I can find on FoxSports says that Wheeler's
mother has fired her attorneys--again.
Northwestern says they're ready to go to trial if necessary, but I doubt
they want the accompanying publicity. (There are also those who think
Northwestern wants to fire coach Randy Walker but is waiting until after
the case is settled.)
The type of supervision that Wheeler's mother has been insisting Northwestern
should have had would appear to be in violation of NCAA rules regarding
summer workouts.
The day may come when even 'voluntary' summer workouts are prohibited.
