Sorry, but you have it wrong. A player's class year for scholarship limits
is established when he first starts using that eligibility, at ANY college.
A player in junior college somewhere today has already started using his
eligibility so he CANNOT POSSIBLY be part of the same class year as the
high school seniors that are about to sign letters of intent.
The number of scholarships open in years other than 2005-06 (where
the HS players will go) is not set based on the number of students who
signed letters of intent last year but on the number who will still be
on scholarship next fall. Someone who quits the team or whose scholarship
is not renewed is no longer part of the 25 player limit for that class year.
(Also, someone who is injured and can no longer compete can be kept on
scholarship but no longer counts against the 25 player limit once the
NCAA approves the permanent status change.)
I don't know that it applies to anyone at UNL at this time, but suppose
a HS senior graduated in December and enrolled at UNL this semester.
Next fall would be his first year of collegiate eligibility, so he would also
be part of the 2005-06 class year for the purpose of the 25 scholarship
limit per class year.
