I suspect that only about half of the head coaches get hired because they
were already a head coach. (A few get hired DESPITE having been a head coach
previously!)
Maybe that's less true in the NFL where they just keep shuffling head
coaches around until they wear out their welcome in too many cities.
IMHO Pelini's biggest weakness as a head coach candidate isn't his age,
it's that he hasn't learned to kiss a** yet, and he doesn't have the rep
to get a head coaching job without doing that. If he's publicly moaning
about how SP cost him a shot at Pitt, he's not making a lot of friends
in that rather closed club of AD's.
