> An employee of the University is obligated to help students whenever possible.

Only within the context of their job description and duties. You
wouldn't expect a janitor to help a student with his calculus, would you?

And note that 'helping' is not the same as not being a disciplined teacher.

Teachers don't owe their students good grades.

The students owe their teacher a reasonable effort in the class, and
the teachers in return owe the students a reasonable and fair assessment
of their academic success in the form of an appropriate grade.

Are some teachers harder than others, with higher expectations? Yep.
And it's a funny thing, the better students tend to gravitate towards
those teachers.

Are some courses harder than others? Yep. Ask any journalism major
about the 'basic reporting' course. At UNL they used to have t-shirts
available only to those who passed it.

How is this applicable to the athletic department? Coaches need to
be tough on their players, being a student-athlete may well be the
hardest thing they've done in their life to that point. In many cases
it may be the hardest thing they do in their entire life.

But they also need to keep in mind that their players are human, and
young.

Many years ago I knew a player who was an OL for the Huskers. He went
into the hospital to have his knee 'scoped, but once he was under they
found a lot more damage than they were expecting and they did a
full-blown repair job on him.

He woke up sporting what the nurses at the hospital called the largest
cast they'd ever seen, weighing in at over 100 lbs.

Any guesses as to who the first non-hospital person he saw when he
woke up was? Yep, Tom Osborne.
