I guess that depends on what you consider civilized behavior.
The UNL Athletic Department is under no legal obligation to assist a
player who wants to transfer, in fact they can be downright obstinant
about granting permission to do so and be completely within their rights
under NCAA Bylaws.
However, there is a doctrine called 'enlightened self-interest' that should
come into play here.
Do we want a coach to have a reputation for being a total SOB, with no
concern about the welfare of his players except to the extent that they
can help the team now?
Nearly every player talks to his former HS coach now and then, and to
other prospective student-athletes. Many of them are big heroes
back at their old HS.
The word could get out that Nebraska is not a 'friendly' school, and
that could be the deciding factor in whether some future 4 star athlete
commits to Nebraska or to some other school.
Is that what you want for the Huskers?
