I've been disappointed like a lot of people by having hopes that we'd show
the measurable improvement this year that we showed last. However, I've also
discovered the therapeutic value in lettin' the fingers fly following a
disppointing NU performance this year (although I was a bit TOO disgruntled when I hit
'send' after the KU and ISU losses here in Lincoln ... coulda' been a lot
worse!).
I think that IF the Huskers ever made it to where they were a consistent top
1/4th-in-the-conference finisher (meaning Top 15 nationally with THIS league
being the way it is) an occasional conference title, post-season tourney crown,
Sweet 16 partipant 2 out of 5 years (a guy can dream, can't he?), always win
that first round NCAA game; basically, do what Wisconsin's managed to do over
the past 10 years ...
... if we ever achieved that next level and remained there, I think
related-traffic on this list would shoot up, Husker hoops fandom would reach the next
level right along with the program and people would rediscover the game of
college basketball. Reason being because it would be now be relevant in an
exciting way for the school and state we love.
Here's MY keen sense for the obvious ...
We're all human and we all love a winner. And NU basketball hasn't won. Not
anywhere close to what we consider "winning" in Big Red land. College
basketball isn't what college football is here ... no where close ... who wonders
why?
I'm a huge follower and constituent of Husker hoops ... but there have been
times at the end of Collier's first few years and the last few seasons of the
Nee era, where I just had to "check out" and not take it so seriously.
If those who bleed red and live in Maryland, or California, or Arizona could
actually catch the end of a big Husker win on ESPN College basketball more
than once every six years, then you'd have some potential for reincarnating some
of the NU hoops fans that Danny Nee killed off his last few years here (by the
way, highlights of the fans storming the floor at Bob's House aired moments
after the conclusion of last night's win). If NU was a top 25 team perenially,
those out-of-state fans would start watching the ESPN bottom line for the
score, check the Husker List for updates, and watch the national sports shows at
10 p.m., or whenever, to see how Husker basketball fared (you might even have
a Husker hoops schedule in your desk at work? At home?!!).
Sorry for the length ... but I think I'm just getting started. Look, there's
another Husker basketball thread now!
