Depends what you mean by "written off." I was using this in a football sense. If it is determined a player can't cut it or is a player the coach can do nothing with sometimes the cord just has to be cut. Many times it is nothing more than a program going in a different direction, which I believe is a lot of what happened at NU. Many times it goes deeper than that. I believe as a coach one has to work with a player as much as possible. But, I don't believe given time a coach is obligated to continue working with a player regardless of the circumstances.

You and I disagree here. I believe kids, as well as other people, fall into three different categories. Those that try to do the right thing and are good people, those that with help and response to that help can lead a productive life, and those that will never amount to anything because they are not willing to be helped. I have never seen a kid yet that you have to teach them to do wrong. Every kid I have ever seen you have to teach them to do right. Education is kind of like the the old saying, "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink." The only way education is going to help anyone is if after they are taught they are willing to apply those principles to daily life. Unfortunately there are far too many that resist.
