There is no possible way anyone could know if Birkel was still on the football team he would or wouldn't have been out drinking. Being on the team never seemed a deterrent for many people. To point at Callahan, even speculatory, for not keeping Birkel on the team which lead to his troubles with the law is really reaching. A coach cannot keep someone on the team just because at some point in time that person may get into trouble if he is not on the team. I still maintain that while a 20 year old may have feelings on how he was treated in a given situation most 20 year olds have little concept of professionalism.
