Coaches today have to act as mentors and substitute
parents; whether or not that should be the case, that
is the reality of today.
Every 20 year old does stupid things. Some of those
stupid things are also against the law, as is the case
in the allegations against Andy Birkel. In this case,
if Birkel is guilty, he will suffer the appropriate
penalty and hopefully learn a lesson.
Bill Callahan, on the other hand, is paid well over a
million dollars a year to lead young men. He was hired
to lead the Nebraska football team, not just recruit
new players. When he fails to do that (as Birkel
alleges), he is failing to do the job that he is being
paid very well to do.
As I remember the allegations by Birkel, Birkel
believes that Callahan had his reasons. But Birkel
insists that Callahan refused to say what (a) Birkel
was doing wrong or (b) Birkel needed to do.
The fact that Andy Birkel screwed up 2 months later
doesn't diminish Birkel's allegations. If anything,
it magnifies the problem that Birkel alleges. Perhaps
if Birkel was still part of the program, he might not
have been out drinking that night, as has been
alleged.
