This match was televised, I actually found it in a hotel in San Diego. :-)
I was predicting a 23-15 win by OSU, but knew if one match swung the other
way, the score would be close. Klien's win over the #2 wrestler was big.
That being said, there were 3 very questionable calls and one very serious
scoring mistake that any of which could have called NU the winner.
BTW, the ref was a former NU wrestler, so hard to argue bias.
ANyway at 174, unranked (but very good) Marc Harwood, losing late in the
match tried a throw on the #1 wrestler in the country. He hit it & looked like
he had a fall. Ref was not in a great position to call & Pendelton got out of trouble,
winning the match. 10 team point swing there.
At 197, BJ PAdden also went against the #1 wrestler down 1 in the 3rd period with
1 point built up on riding time. Padden looked to have an escape (1 point and
preserve the riding time point) No call, Padden is ridden out & loses the Riding Time point.
Also late in the match Rosholt (from OSU) runs Padden off the mat to avoid a
point. Either of those points give Padden the lead in the 3rd. ROsholt would
also wrestle very differnetly, losing instead of winning, so hard to predict the outcome.
Finally as Steve pointed out the scoring mistake cost NU 1 team point and a tie. That was
obvious, but I do not know what the NCAA rules are on appeals.
Considering OSU has 5 (half) wrestlers on its team that are probable NCAA finalists (4 ranked
number 1, one ranked number 2), all were in action last night, this was huge for Nebraska.
I certainly hope NU's appeal is upheld and it is called a tie.
