'Fair use' can get really tricky, and despite some knowledge in the
area I am not an intellectual property attorney.
Let's say, for example, that Woody wrote something caustic about the Huskers
and people want to discuss it. Even though his columns are all copyrighted
(with the copyright possibly owned by or assigned to his publisher), using
excerpts here for the purpose of critical commentary is acceptable fair
use as long as those quotes are short.
How much can you quote and get away with it? Sorry, but there aren't
any really good guidelines here as to what constitutes a 'material portion'
of something like a newspaper column.
If it makes you want to go read the original piece, that's probably within
the fair use guidelines, though a jury could always decide otherwise.
