I believe you are right and am not disagreeing. It was originally called Weak SIDE Linebacker, not Weak Linebacker, and Strong SIDE Linebacker, and not Strong Linebacker. So, it wasn't meant to suggest strength or weaknes but which side of the field they went to. Coaches seemed to figure if you sent the player to the weak side every time he would learn the position better and easier than if you had a left linebacker and right linebacker. In that situation sometimes one would be weak side and sometimes strong side. But, things evolve and football coaches seem wont to use their own jargon.
