I have actually wondered the same thing but I will interject what I think it is. NU calls its linebackers WILL, SAM, and MIKE. Years ago, and at in other programs, the linebackers are called weak side, strong side, and middle linebackers. Notice the first letter of each corresponding. I believe that is the basic idea. I am not much of an X's and O's person to give you their exact responsibilities.
The other position at NU I have wondered where it came from is rush end. I have a general concept of the position but I have never heard the term "rush end" anywhere but at NU.
