All the data I have on my site was entered "by hand". I used to work at
the Sporting News and had access to some old NCAA yearbooks so I did
1970-1972 while I was there. I takes me about 8 hours to do a whole
season, typing in each game.
Last year I came across James Howell's college football archive at:
http://homepages.cae.wisc.edu/~dwilson/rsfc/history/howell/
It's an excellent resources and he's welcomed me to use his data to
complete my historical rankings. I'll probably get around to doing that
this Spring.
It's a little disturbing that my rankings don't have 1970 Nebraska
(11-0-1) ranked #1. We tied USC (6-4-1) and Notre Dame (11-1) lost to
them, but our 17-12 bowl win over LSU (9-3) was a little less impressive
than ND knocking off previously undefeated Texas (11-1).
On the other hand, it wouldn't surprise me if the 82 or 83 caught a break
in my ratings and ended up #1.
I'm a little famous on the internet and I'd guess the BCS people have
taken a look at my ratings once or twice. I suppose if I dropped the
gambling slant from my website, I might appear more politically correct.
On the other hand, after corresponding with some people like Massey or
Jerry Palm, I'm not sure I would want to be part of that big mess.
About ten years ago, I was one of about half a dozen computer ratings
systems on the internet (I first posted my ratings, publically, on this
list in about 1990). Nowadays, they're a million of us. You can see
some of them here:
