[Husker] Landmark Win

I'm with Jay. And from my living room, that was one of the most amazing
sporting events that I have ever watched. It had all of the story lines:
undermanned, injury riddled underdog facing the behemoth; the tradition
blah, blah, blah; the coach under fire, etc. It was like watching "Miracle
on Ice" or "Hoosiers". It was so apparent through the entire game that this
team has one HUGE heart. Just like against TTech, OU, the first half of
Mizzou, and KSU, these players never gave up. They never ceased to believe.
You could feel it. And for some strange reason, they stayed on and played
through it all when "fans" wanted to bicker about the WCO, SP, BC, season
tickets, or some undereducated vernacular-spewing ET reject playing sports
analyst.

It was obvious that the Husker's patchwork OL was struggling against the MU
pass rush. It was obvious, and summed up by BC after the game, that the
special teams had lots of holes due to injury. It was obvious
that--according to the ESPN bobbleheads--MU was supposed to, should and
would win the game. It was obvious even to most of the Husker Nation that,
just like going into Folsom Field, the Huskers would not come away with a
win, and were just hoping not to get embarrassed on national television.
But for some reason, no one told Zack Taylor (or Zack Brown) not to get off
the Field Turf when he was lying under some 350-pound Wolverine. He is
unbelievable, standing in there and hitting Nunn for the game winner after
the beating he took. No one told Corey Ross that he should'nt expect to get
160+ rushing yards.

I didn't notice the officiating, though there were mistakes, as much as I
noticed heart and drive that this team brought. I listened to the
4-second-delayed Rose and Fiala and didn't really care if the call wasn't
perfect (particularly saying that Bullocks gave up the TD catch, when it was
Tiedke). And I didn't care that Dagunduro should have been taken out of the
game and disciplined for advancing the fumble when he should have fallen on
it. The week leading up to the game included so much bad news for the
Huskers with injuries, suspensions and academic ineligibilities. But
somehow, Bill Callahan and his staff got that team to step on the field with
the attitude that any Husker team before them stepped on it with.

I just don't get how anyone who watched that game doesn't feel like this
team may be one of the most overachieving teams (and, no I don't think that
there's a ESPN web site to vote on the top 50 overachieving teams from each
conference in the last 28 and a half years, but I wouldn't be surprised)
that NU has sent to a bowl (I'm sure that I'm way off on this because I
wasn't at the great blizzard-bowl of '54 or what have you, but I don't
care). To me, the officials and ESPN, and the fact that the game was little
more than periodic interruptions in the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce
infomercial (and I could still smell the River Walk with every clip), were
just peripheral to the achievement on the field by the Huskers.

I want to thank the team for giving us a(nother) HUGE win!

Derek

Hello Husker List Friends --

I've been intentionally quiet this season, reading all
the posts but not wanting to get too excite about wins
or too disappointed about losses.

Well, that's changing.

What we saw tonight was a monumental win. A friend of
mine put it best before kickoff: "this would be a
landmark win for you guys."

He's right. I know we've had some big moments in the
last decade, but it was followed with a series of
letdowns and uncertainty. Let this be a statement to
the rest of the country that Nebraska is on its way
back... in a big way.

Order isn't restored, yet, but just wait a little
longer.

Short of my graduation in 2000, this is my proudest
moment as a Husker since the 97 championship.

Restore the Order.
Go Big Red.
