The problem is that all but 3 occured prior to 1936, the first year the 
AP Poll was used.  Since that time, generally everybody "recognizes" the 
winner of the AP Poll as owning at least a share of the national title.  
Before 1936, exactly which polls/ratings sytems are valid national 
championship selectors is open to debate.  Many of these early national 
championships were rewarded *years* after those seasons ended.
