More to add bulk rather than wisdom to the burgeoning HuskerList
pre-season discussion, I feel the need to say I'm just as
enthusiastic today as I ever was about Husker prospects before a
season's opener.

I have no idea how the individual games will play out or how season
will fare, how many wins and how many losses will occur, or whose
successes will gain fleeting fame.

You might say I'm more interested watching these young men develop as
persons than in celebrating team results. I'd just as soon see an
unknown walk-on represent the State and the University as an
acclaimed scholarship player. Team victories are fine when honorably
achieved, but to me they rate second to personal accomplishments.

To make an analogy: back in the bad old days when AkSarBen was still
functioning, I used to attend the races with a friend who bet heavily
on the Thoroughbreds. He could never understand how I could inspect
the horses in the paddock and watch the race until the final half
furlong, only to turn and walk away. It was quite beyond him that I
was interested only in how individual horses performed during a race
, not in the order of finish - - on which I never wagered.

Am I excited about the Huskers? Yep. Will be next season, too. And
the season after that.
