Greetings Husker Fans,
Having quickly become bored with an NFL Draft discussion that naturally melted down into another tiresome Solich vs Callahan debate, I thought I would post some news on the Husker Baseball team.
First, Joba Chamberlain was named B12 Co-Pitcher of the week for his dominating performance over #8 ranked Baylor last weekend. He held the Bears to 1 run on 8 hits while striking out 10. Over his last 26 innings he is 2-0 with 1.04 ERA - striking out 25 while only walking 3. There is no doubt he is the ace of the staff and is turning in one of the best seasons by a Husker starter in recent history, probably since the Shane Komine days.
Also, Alex Gordon was named to the Baseball America's Golden Spikes watch list. For those of you unaware, this is college baseball's equivalent of the Heisman Trophy and the second straight year that Gordon has been named to the watch list. Gordon leads the B12 with a .406 average as well as leading the conference in walks, runs scored, on-base and slugging percentage. He remains a virtual lock to be a Top 5 pick in June's amateur baseball draft.
Lastly, the Huskers, who are currently ranked #5 by Collegiate Baseball, #8 by Baseball America and #6 by ESPN/Sports Weekly trail Baylor in the B12 standings, with Missouri and Texas all within one game in the loss column. Missouri travels to Texas this weekend for a 3-game series while Baylor hosts Texas Tech.
The Huskers travel to Witchita today for a tilt with the WSU Shockers before heading to Norman for a weekend series with the Sooners. The Sooners are struggling a bit at 22-17 (6-9 in B12) and anything less than a sweep would be a disappointment in my eyes. Tonight, Friday and Saturday's games are being televised on ESPNU while Thursday's game is on ESPN. The OU series runs Thursday to Saturday as to not conflict with final exams at OU.
At this point in the season the Huskers have a very legitimate chance at the B12 regular season title. After OU this weekend the have Missouri at home, Texas Tech on the road and Kansas State at home to wrap up the season along with a non-conference game at Creighton and 2 at home against Northern Illinois.
If the pitching stays consistent and the middle of the line-up continues to produce this Husker baseball team has an excellent shot at hosting a Super Regional and an above average shot at the CWS.
Then again they could go in the tank like last season...but I don't see that happening with this team.
Go Huskers!!!
Sincerely,
Jeffrey Volk
