A few random notes on the Huskers recent talent level and the events of the NFL draft yesterday.
If you use the NFL draft and where players are drafted as the barometer of our relative talent level as compared to our championship years (which really isn't a good barometer at all), then our talent level was definitely down under Solich. The 2005 draft marks the first time since 1998, a period of 7 seasons, that the Huskers have produced a first round draft pick. Compare that to Auburn, who yesterday had 4 first rounders, including 3 in the Top 10 or better yet Miami, who last year alone had 6 first rounders, and that certainly speaks a little bit as to why those teams have performed better on the field of late. In fact, since 1999 and including yesterday, Miami has had 21 first round draft picks compared to our 1.
Yesterday's draft also marked the first time since 1997 that 3 Huskers have been drafted in the first 2 rounds of the draft. I realize that these players drafted yesterday were Solich recruited, but a gap of 7 years between 1st round draft picks and 8 years with 3 or more palyers in the first 2 rounds certainly has to make one at least scratch their head.
I congratulate Washington, Ruud and Bullocks on their accomplishments and wish them the same success that I hope for in all former-Huskers.
Yesterday was a great day for those 3 guys and marked the first time since 1972 that 3 Huskers were drafted in the first 40 players, but let's maintain a little perspective and not extrapolate this to somehow insinuate that our Husker teams of the early 2000's were loaded full of talent. To say those teams had no talent would be false but to say that those teams had talent on par with Oklahoma, Miami, USC, Auburn, etc. etc. etc. would also be false. Lastly, let's also note that with the exception of Incognito (who is not really even a Husker at this point), who went in the 3rd round to St. Louis, no other Huskers are likely to be drafted today.
Have a great day and Go Big Red.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey Volk
