The University of Tennessee had 73,801 attend their Orange and White
Game on April 26, 1986. Since that year they have had no more than
31,500 attend a spring game which is the second highest attendance for
UT.

I meant to ask if the record attendance was a national record instead of

I don't know about a national record, but South Carolina officials where
bragging about the turnout they had for their spring game (the first in
the Steve Spurrier era) which drew nearly 30,000. By contrast, Pitt had
just over 8,000 for their spring game although it was moved to a high
school field because their stadium was unavailable.
