I don't know about a national record, but South Carolina officials where 
bragging about the turnout they had for their spring game (the first in the 
Steve Spurrier era) which drew nearly 30,000. By contrast, Pitt had just 
over 8,000 for their spring game although it was moved to a high school 
field because their stadium was unavailable.
