[Husker] Spring Game

Zac Taylor reminded me a lot today of Rich Gannon of
the Raiders under Callahan - throwing lots of short
underneath routes for a high completion percentage.
In fact, until Taylor's touchdown pass to Fluellen,
the longest throw of the game was the side judge
marking a clip on a kickoff return. On some early
throws on his first 2 drives, Taylor was helped by
some impressive catches by his receivers - especially
Nate Swift, a 6-2 redshirt freshman. That gave Taylor
some confidence, and he really got into a groove.
However, the offensive line looks to be a problem spot
after being a pleasant surprise. Very little running
room, and the refs ignored several holding calls,
especially by Andy Christensen, a redshirt freshman
lineman. Taylor fumbled several snaps, including 2
back-to-back from Gary Pike.
Beau Davis did an ok job being the sacrificial lamb
against the Blackshirts. Joe Dailey threw one
horrible interception in the 2nd quarter, but threw
off the handcuffs of 2004 and showcased his running
ability on several scrambles. If this game had not
been played with the green jerseys, Dailey might have
raised some eyebrows with his play. But, it's
apparant that his skills as a run/pass QB just will
not be a match for this version of the WCO, especially
when you compare him to the other QB's on the roster.
Jordan Adams and Joe Ganz were limited to mopup duty
late in the game; Adams did connect on a couple of
passes in the 4th quarter against some 4th teamers.
On defense, the best player of the game was Titus
Brothers, who was on the 2nd team defense. Several
nice pass deflections and breakups against the 1st
team offense, as well as a couple of nice kickoff
returns. Bo Ruud may have had the hit of the game as
well, against Isaiah Fluellen. (I missed the hit
live, as I was concentrating on Christensen's mugging
of a defensive lineman who didn't have a name on his
jersey. Thank goodness for HuskerVision replays...)
