True. The problem is that those in an official capacity have to be a lot
more circumspect about how they express that frustration: They have
money to raise, players to recruit, playbooks to prepare for 2005, etc.
There are catch phrases that CANNOT be used in officialese, such as
'vote of confidence'. (That's almost always followed by involuntary
job terminations.)
Talk of what happened at Oklahoma is not very comforting to me. It
was a mighty cold decade in Norman in the 90's. Then I look at schools
like Alabama, which hasn't been a model of consistency since the Bear
left, or Texas, which has much more consistent but with seasons that
always seem to fall short of the ultimate goal. I don't know that I
like the idea of emulating either of those program, either.
Those who wonder how far a program can sink can look at Washington,
or perhaps Penn State.
When the Huskers return to prominence (and deep in my heart I do believe
they will--eventually), I hope they do it in a fashion that sets a new
and positive role model for college football teams.
