... you can also follow the Husker basketball team this Thursday night at
8:30 p.m. CDT on ESPN 2 as they take their 2 - 0 record on the road to
Alabama-Birmingham -- a Sweet 16 team from a year ago that upset Kentucky in last year's
Big Dance. It should be a good early season read on where our team and
talent stack up early in the season.

The Huskers have beaten Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Texas Southern thus far.
Ark-P.B. was a bad team. Texas Southern was not. NU has guys like Muhleisen,
Simms and Turek who have played an awful lot of basketball here. Marcus Neal
looks like he's ready to step up to a new role where they'll need him to bury
the three-pointer. The two freshman (McCray and Maric) are legit ... they were
the first two off the bench in the first two games. This team has experience,
and they also have young, capable-of-contributing talent -- with more on the
way.

NU IS getting better. How much better remains to be seen. Pre-conference
schedule includes UAB, Marquette and Tennesse on the road, and Creighton and
Minnesota at home.

I think it's "moving year" in the Big XII. Just my opinion, but Kansas and
Oklahoma State are a given as the best of the conference -- among the best in
the nation. But behind them you've got Texas (who looked beatable the other
night -- actually, they DID get beat), and then the Oklahoma, Missouri, Texas
Tech group -- then Colorado ... Iowa State and K-State (here's where the
"pundits" pick NU) ... and then the duo of A&M-Baylor.

I think that Tech is going to be down (Andre Emmitt is no more), Oklahoma IS
down compared to the teams Sampson ran out there four or five years ago,
Missouri has had more than their share of problems, Colorado HAD talent but no
chemistry -- their talent's eligibility expired (David Harrison and Michelle M.)
so all the chemistry in the world and they're STILL going to be down. K-State,
Iowa State ... Nebraska? Who knows!? No predictions here ... but I will say
without hesitation that NU Basketball is getting better.

Barry has an opportunity to win a lot of fans this year. I'm looking forward
to watching he and his team try. Should be an interesting barometer Thursday
night ... hope we can hang with 'em.
