I just think they tried to change something, that wasn't broken. That
doesn't mean that we would have contended for any championship; but this has
to be the most pathetic season of college football I have ever seen at UNL.
I too was a young boy when Devaney took over and turned UNL into a solid,
football program; into something the rest of the nation envied. We are no
longer envied, we are laughed at nationally.
I feel bad for the kids, they really tried to make the season work, and I
think most of the time they gave it all they could; but when in the past the
leaders, the coaches elevated each other to achieve more and feel pride.
I do hope something does turn around; I would hate to see UNL turn into a
mediocre football program. It takes good coaching and a solid plan to make a
football team, and college football is tough. You have a changing group of
prospects and injuries and young minds every year to deal with; this class
of seniors is not going to want to remember this year. I hope Ruud and a
few others go on to great careers either in football or other walks of life.
I wonder what the excuse will be next year ... or five years from now will
be.
