While I don't presume to know more about the Syracuse
situation than you do, I'm not sure it's as relevant
in today's college football environment. Right now on
ESPN, 2 of the top teams in the country are playing:
Louisville and Boise State. Last night, 4th ranked
Cal-Berkley played in the Holiday Bowl. Tomorrow,
Pitt and Utah play in the Fiesta Bowl. If you were to
go back 4 or 5 years ago, all of those schools would
have fit the "simply do not get the players to
compete" description. But now they have those
players.
With the departure of Miami, Va. Tech, and Boston
College, Syracuse should find it's conference schedule
easier. The Orange should be considered alongside
Pitt as the top 2 football schools in the Big East.
And unless the BCS pulls their automatic bid, that
means they have one of the easiest paths to a BCS game
of any team.
Also, you minimize the impact that good coaching can
provide. Mike Price made some huge mistakes in the bar
after being named head coach at Alabama, but he did
very well at UTEP this year.
