I like to think so. I loved the program no less in the late 60s
when the winning tradition was not yet in place.
But, in the late 60"s it was obvious Devaney had the program going in
the right direction and a new excitement about the program was ushered in. I
can't speak for you but in general I seriously doubt the last 30 years of NU
football would have looked nearly the same if NU was under .500 most years.
Why did the stadium go from roughly 35,000 to 77,000 plus and attendance
quadrupled and sellouts resulted with a waiting list? Obviously, the team was
winning, going to bowl games, and developed a national recognition. People
wanted to be part of it. I doubt you would see 77,000 plus in the stadium with
all the tailgateing and frivolity if the Huskers lost more than they won and
maybe only went to one or two bowl games in the last 30 years. With winning
comes interest in any program.
