I understand, but you don't hear people getting mushy about the great
Husker traditions from the Bill Jennings era.
Virtually all of the college football traditions are a reflection of
a winning program, now or at the time the tradition was started. It's a
way for the fans to bask in the reflected glory of their team and
contribute to the emotions of the game.
Fans don't generally celebrate losing or feel a desire to share in the
experience. (Others may disagree with me, but I think this is true even
of noted losers like the Chicago Cubs, the Brooklyn Dodgers or the
Boston Red Sox. What those fans have is the ability to enjoy the moments
of success when they do happen.)
Perhaps having a few down years will, like fire to a wooden spear, sharpen
and harden the perception of what it means to be a Husker fan and bring
a heightened enjoyment of the team's sucess when it is restored (as most
of us feel it will be.)
