Rod -- this was an excellent post that represents perfectly the way I am
feeling about Nebraska football. I grew up in Grand Island, but moved
to Iowa in junior high and am an alumnus of Iowa State. I grew up
playing nerf football in the street with the Husker games blaring on the
radio. Rick Berns was my all time favorite Husker. I have maintained
my love for the Huskers throughout the years. I have indoctrinated my
Missouri-born, Husker-hating wife into the religion that is the Big Red,
and we have made trips to three of the bowl games in the 90s, and
countless home and away games. She has allowed me to put wall murals of
Memorial Stadium on our bedroom walls, and fill our mantle with Husker
memorabilia. I guess I am trying to convey that I don't feel that I'm a
warm weather fan that's jumping off the bandwagon.
Unfortunately, right now Nebraska is my third favorite team, behind Iowa
State and Ohio! The biggest reason for this, I think, is that it
doesn't seem like there is anything left at Nebraska that "feels" like
Nebraska, and not like any other program.
This year Nebraska has a very highly ranked recruiting class. Let's
suppose this trend continues. Let's even say that the team becomes
successful again, and in three or four years wins a national
championship. Why would this be any different than Oklahoma? Or Ohio
State? Or USC? I have asked the question before, in all seriousness,
without getting much response. Is anything in place at Nebraska that
makes it any different than any other program? I am open to suggestion!

Subject: [Husker] What Do Husker Fans Want?
Bob Hamer's article is an interesting read:
http://www.theindependent.com/stories/122004/spo_hamar20.shtml
Do we want the "mis-steps" outlined in his article? Certainly not.
Maybe the better question is, "Do we want to condone and reward those
mis-steps?"
