All I've seen the Houston AD say is, basically, "we talked about
playing a game, but NU called today and said we weren't".

There was never any contract for the game, so there was no "deal" from
which to back out. At what point does NU become "honor bound" to play
a game?
Notice that it was Houston who set up the televised game, not NU. It
may be that Houston put a lot more effort into getting the game done,
it fell through, and they're upset about possibly losing the TV
revenue (NU is not the only school motivated by the financial bottom
line).
It's not like this happened in late July or August. It appears NU was
upfront about their scheduling with Houston and UH has ample time to
try to find a replacement game. Further, we don't know how many other
schools NU was talking to about playing a game on that date, but which
were also snubbed in favor of Maine.
I'm not willing to convict Mr. Pederson's ethics based on the facts
revealed so far.
