HuskerListers,

I've been living in the south-central mountains of New Mexico, not
far from Las Cruces, since before Tony Samuel was hired and can tell
one and all that he did not, repeat not, fail at NMSU.

Samuel took what was probably the worst Division I football program
in the national and revitalized it, turning it into a contender it
its conference. True, during the six years he was at the helm he was
not able to elevate the program to a higher level than that, but much
of the problem lay in the circumstances he had to deal with.

A great many fans here in New Mexico believe that he was dismissed
prematurely and was making progress toward a real breakthrough, but
now we shall never know. As important, perhaps more important, he
came to be respected for his honesty, integrity, and courage, and
through him the University of Nebraska gained a not inconsiderable
following among New Mexicans.

Thus, the premise for the initial post is moot.
