I'm one who thought NU would have done well to get Spurrier as a coach,
though I doubted that he would be interested at that time. It seems
that Spurrier ran a clean program and put together teams that were
successful and entertaining.
However, there is certainly no contradiction between not wishing to
have Spurrier as NU coach and believing that he is one of the foremost
experts on coaching college football. For example, there are things
about Barry Switzer's behavior that would make me opposed to his hiring
at NU, but I certainly don't question his expertise on coaching college
football.
What I find amusing is your apparent contention that Spurrier should
not be regarded as an authority --- perhaps because you would like to
sugar-coat this year's record as a necessary price to pay for future
success. At the time that Pederson fired Solich, I said it was a rash
action with great risks. I'm still optimistic that NU can avoid one
of those risks --- a prolonged unsuccessful period --- but, things didn't
go well this year. I don't think a 5-6 record was necessary --- I'm
of the opinion that the record this year would have been better if
Solich had not been fired or if Callahan had done a better job coaching.
I hope Callahan does a better job next year.
