I would say you probably nailed it. I am just going to make a couple of observations.

One thing about this is I would have thought he would have said something like "I have some evaluating to do." He indicated his plans were to stay. If two weeks passed then it seems more plausible.

I am in no way trying to say you are wrong or am not just trying to be argumentative but I am thinking this one is more likely. One of the biggest reasons I say that is the timing. It might have been the case but I just don't see someone saying they are planning on staying and two days later they are standing in front of a press conference and resigning if it is their decision. People usually don't flip flop that fast unless an offer came in and, at least publicly, that doesn't seem to be the case. I am wondering if he wasn't asked to leave and get it over with so we can get on with recruiting. I am not saying I know more than anyone else. I am just offering some observations.
