I agree Greg. I don't believe it is the most efficient thing to do to wait until all your recruits are in place, or in NU's case three years from now, and then change your whole system. I believe that system has to be in place so recruits know what direction the program is going and so the system is implemented and running in three years. How could Spurrier effectively recruit if he is running some kind of power running game and tells recruits "this is what we are running now but I promise you three years from now we will implement the fun and gun?" There is no way a recruit could be confident that would happen. Plus, those first couple of years would be a total learning process. I'm not sure how many recruits would want to step into that. Most of the time they want a system that is in place. The same for Callahan's program. Whether we want to admit it or not today's players by and large want to go to a school that runs a wide open offense.
The other thing I find a little amusing is there was a time Spurrier was intensely disliked among NU fans. When Pederson was doing his search for a coach Spurrier's name came up and there were all kinds of comments among fans to the effect "oh no, anyone but Spurrier." Now Spurrier is an authority figure to whom our coach should listen. It is always interesting to me how things cycle.
