I still shiver about that game. We stayed at the Fairmont and they let us take blankets and just about anything that would keep us warm to the stadium. I seem to recall they had a major ice storm the next day as we bussed back to Nebraska. Trucks jackknifed all over I-35. My favorite memory of that trip was sharing a blanket at the game with a cute young lady who was a junior at NU. We sat beside each other on the trip to Dallas and she had asked me what year I was. I told her I was a sophomore (which was true, I was a soph at Fremont High). We were fast friends for the rest of the trip and I don't think she ever caught on that I was still in high school. That was also my first real exposure to the Hook 'em Horns sign and the UT fans. They were a bunch of obnoxious jerks that week and not much has changed in 30 years.
One other comment about Dallas weather. I lived there for about eight years and can say that the weather in Great Falls, MT was actually warmer at Christmas time several years when I visited my brother. Those Northers are brutal when they come through. If weather is a major factor in upgrading bowl status, don't look for the Cotton Bowl to move up anytime soon!

I can verify that first-hand. I went to the Cotton Bowl January 1,
1974, when the Huskers took on, and beat, Texas. We had winter coats
and our matching red mittens that my mother knitted for all of us. It
was freezing! Add to that the fact that I, as a 7 year old kid, got
lost coming back from the concession stand and ended up missing all of
the third quarter, and it comes out a pretty memorable trip! As a side
note, we stayed in the Marriott Hotel, and ended up in the same hotel as
the Huskers, AND the Minnesota Vikings, who were in town for the NFC
Championship game. I still have a sheet of autographs with Tom Osborne,
Bob Devaney, Pat Summeral, Bud Grant, and others. Ahh, the memories!

Dallas also can't compete with Arzona, Florida or southern California,
in terms of weather. It can be pretty miserable there in January.
