I certainly don't know better, but I did observe the same thing about
McPherson. That could have a lot to do with the lack of picks for the
Bullocks and for the "drop" in performance for Washington. Seems the same
thing happened back in the 90s. Opponents attempted to pick on younger
players (e.g. Tyrone Williams in '93) and then stayed away from that person
the following year. In Williams' case, as with the Bullocks brothers and
Washington last year, the Husker players stepped up to the challenge and
played like superstars. This year, however, opposing coaches knew the
other 3 were strong and so went to McPherson.
For those of you who review game tapes, take a look at the D-backs, and see
if that is the case. I'd be interested to know if that could be the real
reason for the decline in the defense this year over last. Or possibly,
that coupled with a drop in play by the OLBs. Maybe the coaching wasn't
that bad after all!
