Just to play devil's advocate, if that theory is true, than how did 4-7 Kansas place 2 on the AB12 1st team and 2 on the AB12 2nd team or Baylor at 3-8 place 2 on the AB12 1st team??
Further, KU had 10 players total named to the squad, including Honorable Mentions, with Baylor naming 5. Not bad considering that our Huskers named only 7.
My point is that while I will agree that team success does play into this that the All Big 12 Team is more of an individual honor for players that stood out individually over the course of the season. You can have a handful of outstanding individual players and still have mediocre to poor results as a team as KU and BU show.
On the other hand, the team angle comes in when you see Oklahoma put 16 players on the team (8-1T, 3-2T & 5-HM), including the Offensive Player and the Offensive Newcomer of the Year. When a team has that many players recognized for their individual performances, the team is likely to be pretty darn good. The same holds true for Texas, a team who had a fair amount of success at 10-1, propelled by the individual performance of the 13 players that they placed on the team (6-1T, 5-2T & 2-HM) including the Defensive Player of the Year.
The only slight exception to the rule is Texas Tech, who ONLY managed to parlay their 14 AB12 selections into a 7-4 record.
Just my 2 cents.
Sincerely,
