Tom, if an install has 3 sub panels plus the main panel, should a surge
protector be installed at each sub panel?

One thing to note about RC80's, electrically speaking, it is 'a sitting
duck.' It sits between the HVAC transformer and the HAI transformer and
there is tons of wire. I have 2 strong recommendations:
- Install whole house surge (Like the Leviton 51110-1 $45.33)
- Review your grounding. The HAI controller MUST be grounded. When not
properly grounded it is not uncommon to have thermostats fail.
Before I followed the advice above I lost 2 thermostats at my home and 2 at
my parents. After making the above changes we have not lost a thermostat in
over 5 years.

Why are you losing the RC-80's what is happening? Maybe you need an
isolation relay (HAI product) if it is being fried somehow. Give me some
more details I might be able to offer you some assistance in
troubleshooting. I helped figure out a problem with 128 RC-80 thermostats
in an apartment complex, your situation should be simpler to figure out.
