[Hai-users] VOIP Phone Service

Jay,

I use Vonage VoIP service for 11 months now, and I have an Omni Pro II. I
am able to call in to the OP2 from another line, access the OP2 menu from
inside the home. The system responds to picking up and hanging up the
phone. I have not found any problems with VoIP with the exception of loss of
service due to bad modem hardware, which Vonage is quick to replace (They
ship overnight.)

The only concern is if you have a central monitoring station. Like others
have mentioned, if you lose your internet connection for any reason, you
have lost your phone. For my clients, I recommend a cell backup service for
the central monitoring. I use a Telular T-100 modem; it maintains a
constant dial tone for the HAI system in any event of a phone line failure.

This cost my clients about $10 a month. However, I take the time to explain
this method. "You save over $50 a month in phone service, and you pay $10 a
month for cell back up for any reason you lose the phone line, including
tampering and cutting the phone line." No one has turned down the service
yet. Their still saving $40 by using VoIP.

I have heard some VoIP systems don't maintain the proper voltage. I would
recommend contact the manufactures (HAI, OnQ, Aegis) technical support
hotline. I know the OP2 has a value in the programming where it can tweak
the detection of the dead line detect if you have a problem. You must use
this under the discretion of the Manufacturer though.

Subject: [Hai-users] VOIP Phone Service

Has anyone had success using VOIP phone service instead of traditional
land-line service?

I am using an Omni II and would like to make the change if it doesn't cause
any problems. My system is being monitored and I frequently use phone
access to control the system. If VOIP would interfere with either of these
functions, it would be a deal-breaker.

Thanks for your input.
